Doug Hutchings

Neighborhood Specialist

When Doug and his wife purchased their home in Alexandria, they did not know what to expect even though they have lived in the local area for 5 years. They have been so pleased with the area and the people in their neighborhood. The community has a newsletter and holds events such as an Oktoberfest. They signed up for the commuinity watch program and are looking forward to their training class. Doug works from home and loves to take his beagle for walks to break up the day. Send an email.

Comments about Alexandria

Huntington (Submitted by DC)

Pros: Walking distance to yellow line metro; Close to Old Town Alexandria; lots of shopping just a drive or metro ride away; new Whole Foods in Alexandria is VERY close; easy access to I-95, I-495, I-295, and DC; Big yards; good amount of neighborhood parks; lots of open space for an urban area. Cons: No restaurants or shopping in walking distance; housing stock is dull and lacking in character; area is gentrifing so there are some unattractive properties; no pedestrian access to Old Town (which i can see fom my backyard); homeless people in the area Overall this is a decent neighborhood. My main prolem with it is that pedestrian accessability is lacing. It would be nice to be able to walk to Old Town. Also, the side streets don'd seem to go between neighborhoods so if you want to do any jogging or walking you have to walk on main roads which are busy and not very pleseant.

Franconia (Submitted by ra)

A quiet older neighborhood with mostly families in single family homes. Close to Mark Twain School, grocery stores (Rose Hill), other dept. & specialty stores (Kingstowne). Good neighbor community. NO association fees ! Close to Beltway (~ 1 mile) and Fairfax County bus stop. Some new townhomes development in some neighborhoods.

Huntington (Submitted by ra)

A changing neighborhood with new condo hi-rises, more shops amidst older neighborhoods and less developed areas. It is only minutes away from Old Town and Hybla Valley, so shopping is not far away. 1/2 mile away from Beltway. Also close to Mt. Vernon Trail -- good for bikers, runners. Huntington Ave. is busy, but I would not recommend walking alone at night.
