The Mantua community has excellent schools and a very active civic organization. There is no home owners association, but the residents have various interest clubs that meet regularly- Moms groups, tennis club, gardening club, book clubs, community pool, etc. This is a great community for families - there is an annual Mantua parade, Pool parties, kids clothing rummage sale, and more. The community consists of single family homes and most of the streets have sidewalks. The location is wooded and on rolling hills, many of the homes are on parkland and all of the homes are close to the Fairfax County cross county biking/hiking trail and Eakin Park. Although residents have the feeling of seclusion, they are close to I495, I66, Route 236, Route 50 and many shops and restaurants. It is a 20 minute drive to Washington, DC without heavy traffic.

Fairview (Submitted by AFS)
This is a great neighborhood in Fairfax city. The houses are approx 50 years old. Many of the houses have been updated (ranging from minor updates like new flooring, updating bathrooms, to major renovations - adding levels, rooms, etc). Many of the residents have been here for 20-30 years, with some original owners. This group of residents seems to love the neighborhood and their homes, although updating their houses has not been a priority. As this age group moves out (many seem to be going to retirement communities, condos, apartments), and we see a much younger group move in, houses are updated. Regardless of the age group, the residents here are family oriented, take good care of their homes and yards, and generally enjoy living in this safe neighborhood (which is walking distance to bus stops, old town fairfax, and the soon to come town center!), and very close to George Mason University. There are walking trails throughout and around the neighborhood, many trees - it feels very peaceful and almost rural, but is very close to shops, great restaurants, schools, and is only about 15 miles from DC.
The few (and minimal) drawbacks to the neighborhood include: not enough off street parking so many streets are lined with cars, and a couple of houses are in disrepair and need some fixing up.
The neighborhood is in the city of Fairfax, where taxes are low and the services are the best I've ever seen (and I've lived in seven different towns). I love this neighborhood, and although we are now in a position to buy a larger/newer home, we've decided to stay put b/c we like the neighborhood (and the city) so much - we will probably end up adding a new kitchen, master bedroom, and expand the family room to update our current house so we can continue living in this neighborhood. I would not hesitate to recommend this neighborhood to anyone - families, couples, singles, retirees - I think this is a neighborhood that anyone (at least anyone who likes suburbia) will love!
