Oakton (Submitted by DRW)
We lived in Oakton Estates, which is a very nice subdivision in the heart of Oakton. If you are considering purchasing one of the houses in this area, I highly recommend inquiring about membership to the local pool. In our neighborhood, pool memberships were hard to come by, and the waiting list was 5+ years.
The public schools in Oakton are very good. Our oldest child went to Waples Mill Elementary School; we were very pleased with the teachers and staff. The PTA is very active and there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer in the school if you are so inclined.
Generally, Oakton is fairly affluent, but for the most part the people are very outgoing and friendly. Most every neighborhood has a social group(s) that meet regularly. If you have children, be sure to inquire about the mothers group and baby-sitting coop. If you like to run or bike, there are a couple of bike trails fairly close by. The trail along route 7100 is very nice, and you can take it to the W&OD trail. Once on the W&OD, you can ride into DC, or out to Purcellville; I believe the trail is about 45 miles long.
What I miss most about Oakton is being so close to a number of good shopping areas. We particularly liked Fair Lakes Shopping Center and Reston Town Center. Fair Oaks Mall is also very close and has a number of nice shops. Tysons Corner Shopping Mall is fairly close and has about every store has most of upper end stores that you can possibly think of.

Miller Heights (Submitted by KR)
This is great kid friendly, heavily wooded neighborhood. The family co-op provides play dates and many activities which is fantastic way to meet families with kids the same age. The builders left all the trees 25 years ago, so it has a private feel, yet still close to everything (Metro, stores, etc).
