Comments about Vienna, VA

Tanglewood (Submitted by JT)

Tanglewood is a lovely suburban neighborhood just outside the town of Vienna. It is served by very good public schools: Flint Hill Elementary, Thoreau Middle school and Madison High School. Flint Hill and Madison are within walking distance. The neighbors are very friendly and supportive, and there are many school age children who play together. It is close to two large shopping malls, Tysons Corner and Fair Oaks, as well as many smaller shops and restaurants in Vienna and Fairfax. One of the few drawbacks is the ever increasing traffic, including heavy trucks and cosntruction equipment, due in large part to the relentless development allowed by the County Board of Supervisors, who never seem to say "no" to development. Tanglewood is about 2 miles from the Vienna metro station, though parking fills up quickly on weekdays.

I've lived at two separate addresses in this zip code; both were townhomes. The community is in the Vienna, VA area near the end of the orange line (both residences were within a mile of the Metro). This area is a pretty good locale and is a little off-center to plenty of good shopping, including a 10- to 15-minute commute to Tyson's Corner or Fair Oaks malls. There are several good grocery stores, including a Safeway (closest) and Whole Foods (located in Vienna proper). This area is in a relatively safe community although I am aware of a double homicide that occurred between the two times I lived in Vienna; as a male I frequently ran at night and never felt more concerned about my safety than during the day. My experience with neighbors was that they tended to keep to themselves but I do not recall MANY rude events (although some do come to mind; I assume this is the case with virtually any neighborhood and would not place too much emphasis on this point). Both townhomes I lived in were within 0-5 years of age (I left the DC area in 1999) and cannot comment on some of the older communities that are present in this zip code.
